Litigation Service Robots at an Explosive Growth in China in 2017

2017 is about to end, and this year is being called the “First Year of Technological Justice”. The Sanbot robots were glad to be a part of this new development. Throughout the year, this robot has been introduced to work for a large number of courts, judicial institutions, and law offices in Beijing, Shenzhen, Zibo, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Foshan, Chengdu, and many other cities throughout China. The robots were given special names by the users like Xiaofa, Fa Xiaobao, Xiaolv, and more.

China’s government has been very impressed with Sanbot’s capabilities. In April and June, the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China each issued Speeding Up the Construction of the Wisdom Court and the 2017–2020 Guide to the Prosecution of Big Data. These documents advocate for the application of technology such as Big data and intelligent voice recognition in the judicial system, helping to popularize AI products to be used in litigation.

Another important driving force behind AI in the courts is the demand from citizens. According to the official statistics of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China, when the Chinese litigation registration system began working, the number of litigation cases has continued to rise since May 2015. But at the same time, the number of litigation personnel is reducing. This has lead to an unfortunate situation where there are more cases but fewer legal personnel. Standard technology is also lowering the efficiency of litigations services. To guarantee better and more efficient litigation services, several legal departments have begun to adopt new technologies.

Nanjing Aegis, the robotic litigation service solution developer for Sanbot robot, told the media, “There are huge differences between the urban and rural areas in China. The main legal service resources are mainly in the large cities; the small and medium-sized cities have fewer and sometimes weaker legal services than the large metropolises. Also, the litigation consultant and service charges are too expensive for many citizens. The litigation service robot not only embodies the spirit of law and serves the people, but also helps free up legal personnel from basic and redundant work so they can devote more energy to work on more technical and difficult work. The application of litigation service robots is the future.”

Till now, most of the 100 practical cases of “Robot + Litigation service” are intelligent litigation enquires. For example, the Sanbot litigation service robot, which works for Beijing Fengtai District Judicial Bureau, has a deep knowledge and understanding of the law and will quickly provide answers to the procedures for marriage and family affairs, traffic accidents, intellectual property, employee disputes and business personnel, etc. It can also remember more than 30 million historical cases and the 5-million-word laws and regulations for the litigants’ reference. The advanced AI robot can also calculate the litigation charges, worker’s compensation, traffic accident compensation, and more.

In addition to Sanbot’s legal service solution, some courts or companies have made further developments based on Sanbot robot’s autonomous mobile and video conversation functions, allowing the robots to guide people around the courthouse, provide guidance, and one-key assistant for business affairs.

In the future, the legal industry expects more from the litigation service robot. Litigation personnel want the AI service robots to be qualified with more functions:
A smarter “Cloud brain” for the robot to push the history cases;
Offer a uniformed standard of judgment;
Help non-legal experts understand the law and correct any inaccuracies and human-error;
The robot can automatically generate and review the litigation documents and court documents based on speech recognition, semantic analysis, and robot graphic recognition technologies.

The personnel are expecting the litigation service robots to handle all of the “standard functions” in the future.

The most popularized litigation service robot is the Sanbot series robots from QIHAN Technology. Both QIHAN’s Sanbot Elf and Sanbot Max intelligent robots have an open API and can be further developed to suit any particular work scenario, and both the robots are offering litigation services now.

The Vice President of Sanbot robot, Ryan Wu, stated that this is just a beginning of the “judicial intellectualization” where robots offer litigation consultation services via voice recognition and human-robot interaction. The development of science and technology along with the cooperation between robot manufacturers, robotic solution operations, and justice departments will make litigation service robots more intelligent and better in reaction speed, intellectual deep learning, and have a better user experience. This will lead to an increase in the usage of these robots. In the future, the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the provision of legal services and courthouses will be very prominent.

IFA 2017: China manufacturers boosting service robots to the world

BERLIN — Chinese manufacturers are fast establishing themselves in the up-and-coming service robot industry, known to be the domain of Japanese rivals.

At the IFA consumer electronics trade show currently underway here, about 90% of the companies featuring intelligent service robots hail from China. One of them is Shenzhen's Qihan Technology, which unveiled the Sanbot Nano home companion robot for the first time at the expo.

The roughly 70cm Sanbot Nano can understand voice commands and be directed to sing, order pizza or change the TV channel. The automaton also comes with an onboard camera allowing the owner to monitor the house remotely via smartphone. The advanced AI robot for home will hit stores in October, aimed to English-speaking countries & areas.

Compatriot Hangzhou Amy Robotics revealed details of software that lets users of the Amy A1 robot program various customer service functions. The skill set includes guiding customers to rooms and taking orders at restaurants. Amy Robotics says its robot can help control rising labor costs in China. The company is also ramping up business in Western nations and the Middle East.

Shanghai PartnerX Robotics is putting out miniature programmable robots for education that kids can put together themselves. They come with a simple programming language for controlling movements.

Chinese companies are pouring resources into artificial intelligence robotics as demand for labor-saving techniques climbs amid a graying population and rising wages. The government has also encouraged the growth of the robotics industry, making it a part of its Made in China 2025 initiative.

Many observers say that the quality of Chinese-made robots is still a work in progress. But the speed at which mainland companies are acquiring technological expertise is reportedly exceeding expectations. Chinese appliance giant Midea Group bought German industrial robot maker Kuka just last year.

For advanced service robots, the global market is expected to double to $20 billion in 2022, according to Indian corporate intelligence firm Market Research Future.

Sanbot robot goes into pharmacy and creates new marketing model

Recently, intelligent medicine sales robots appear in numerous pharmacies in China. The sales robots not only broadcast the functions of health and nutrition medicine, but also answer related health care questions and perform interactions with customers. The intelligent humanoid robots were hired by Mckin, the Chinese well-known healthy food and health care products. The robot, with model number of Sanbot Elf, is manufactured by QIHAN Technology.

Intelligent robot breaks the barriers of offline retail.

The online-to-offline shopping model is becoming general as the E-shopping becomes hotter and hotter, which pushes medicine retailersto offer door-to-door services step by step. Serious of Apps now promote that they can send the medicine with half an hour, which is more and more convenient to customers. Thus, the offline pharmacies are less competitive compared to online ones.

As the leading manufacturer of healthy food and health care products, Mckin hired artificial intelligent robots to support its sales service in the pharmacies. This helps build intelligent offline sales system and makes a whole new marketing demonstration in the intense market competition.

“The robots broadcast the advertisement of health care products and promote the functions of the products, which is more reliable than human’s promotion. Because the advanced humanoid robot gives the feeling of reliability as AI big data know much better about the using scope than human brains. Using robot to deliver product information not only eliminates the customer’s psychological repellence, but also promotes their desires to buy the products.” One product manager from Mckin introduced.

Artificial intelligence goes into pharmacy and creates new marketing model.

It was the first case that offline pharmacy introduced artificial intelligence to perform the promotion. As far as I learned, the retail promotional artificial intelligent robot is the commercial chain solution issued by QIHAN Technology.

Sanbot intelligent robot, which is used in chain business, has been introduced by supermarkets, department stores and chain convenience stores and garnered praises by a great number of retailers and customers. Retailers adopt the advanced AI robot as interactive carrier, which saves much cost compared with human labor. For the chain business, QIHAN Technology designed a leading robotics system for chain business – Multi-service Platform System. Through MPS, retailers can customize and create tasks for Sanbot on a PC, tablet or smartphone and distribute them to a fleet of Sanbots over the QIHAN cloud.

Sanbot intelligent robot used in chain business is capable of entertainment interaction, remote shop-keeping, advertising promotion, product introduction, customer reception, exhibition and more business models. Till now, the customized robot has been introduced by pharmaciesin Chongqing, Nanchang, Fuzhou, Hefei, Jinan, Kunshan, Lanzhou, Baoji, Nanning, Luoyang and some other first or second level cities.

Commercializing intelligent robot and making businesses and customers benefit and experience the actual commercial value from commercial service robots are the businessconcept QIHAN Technology has been practicing. The cooperation with Mckin, which fuses artificial intelligence into medicine retail area, is another achievement of QIHAN’s “Robot plus Various Industries” strategy.

Meet the new generation customs service robot

[Background] To respond to the call of “Internet plus Public Service” (proposed by the State Council), on October 1st, 2016; Gongbei Customs introduced Sanbot intelligent robot to create “Intelligent Customs” and named the robot Xiaohai. Since October 1st, the customs service robots have witnessed an average of 340,000 people per day at customs.

After 9 months, Gongbei Customs welcomed a new generation Xiaohai customs service robots. Compared to the original version, this new and upgraded generation customs service robot comes with many more advantages. The following are just a few of the advantages:

  1. The new generation is much taller, making it easier for adults to use. Travelers do not have to bend over to operate and interact with Xiaohai robot.
  2. The arms, manufactured using 3D printers, are upgraded to be more human like and even have moving hands.
  3. A thermal imaging function was added onto the pedestal of the robot: one HD camera helps the robot to lock onto the inspected object and the thermal imaging camera captures the thermal image.

All of the apps are customized for customs passenger services and inspection services, such as

         Passenger inquires
         Random inspections
         Translation
         Tax Inspections
         Background checks
         Facial recognition
         and more

Let’s have a look on how the robots help customs officials with customs services.
  • Dispersing Information: Sanbot broadcasts notifications through voice and video to help guide first-entry and multiple-entry passengers (usually planning on staying for roughly 15 days) on which channels to go through. Also, the content on the big-screens connect to Sanbot advanced AI robot via HDMI for a matching broadcast to help better notify passengers.

  • Informing travelers about important laws: Sanbot never stops broadcasting and informing travelers about customs laws, regulations, and forbidden contraband items, helping passengers to abide by the laws and regulations and give them the knowledge report any illegal activity.

  • Inquiry Services: In Sanbot’s system, this intelligent service robot is capable of answering thousands of frequently asked questions about customs services. A traveler only needs to activate/wake-up Sanbot. There are three ways to wake-up Sanbot customs service robot and start asking questions. Passenger can click the microphone App, call “Xiaohai, Xiaohai” or they just stand in front of the robot and Sanbot will wake up when its camera detects a passenger’s face via facial recognition. During the inquiry, passengers can choose to call a human service person if the robot cannot answer some special or extremely specific questions.

However, some passengers complained about the interactions with the service robot and how they were not as good as expected. Chen Lei, the customs service robot engineer from QIHAN Technology, responded to the customs officials and media, “During rush hour, the loud noise affects the robot’s voice recognition and this is the drawback of most voice recognition systems; and the other reason is that the customs content in the robot are professional and written in a standard dialect, and it may not recognize it if the passengers’ questions are too colloquial.”

With the intelligent AI system powered by IBM Watson, Sanbot supports text translation, voice translation and more translation techniques in 10 languages for passengers’ inquiring services. In addition, passengers can check out their goods’ tax through Sanbot’s Tax Inspection App when they go through customs clearances.

Thermal Imaging Inspections: A thermal imaging function was added onto the pedestal of the robot: one HD camera helps the robot to lock onto the inspected object and the thermal imaging camera captures the thermal image. With this function, the most advanced robot helps custom officials examine passengers’ bags, suitcases, etc. and is mainly used beside the inspection line. The function reveals the covered goods that people cannot see with the naked eye. It helps monitor whether passengers smuggling undeclared or contraband materials, improving the customs officials’ speed and accuracy and dealing with customs inspections and combat smuggling effectively.

Sanbot can perform even more functions for customs inspections. Once the one-key defense is deployed, Sanbot will send an alert once a moving object is detected in the specified areas; if a criminal’s ID information is inputted into the robot’s database, Sanbot sends the alert to customs officials once the suspect is detected so the officials can do further inspection on the suspected passenger, fighting against crimes and effectively guarding people’s safety.

Robots make the future of healthcare more advanced

What does the future of healthcare look like? For the past decade, cutting-edge technology has led to medical advancements and innovative practices that have reshaped healthcare. Today, healthcare professionals have the tools, computing power and collective research, to effectively diagnose and care for their patients. From augmented reality to 3D printed drugs, the healthcare industry is truly living in the future.

Recently, the healthcare industry has explored leveraging robots in everyday care, from streamlining administration tasks to improving healthcare practices. Intelligent service robots offer a new way to collect and share data, while expediting the process at the same time. Below are practical ways in which robots can be deployed in the healthcare environment to assist healthcare professionals and improve patient experience:

  1. Automate Diagnostics: Roughly 130.4 million ER visits occur in the United States each year. With the abundance of patients requiring medical attention, it is critical that doctors are able to diagnose patients in a timely manner. To ensure an efficient use of time, advanced medical robotics can be used to assist doctors in streamlining visits by automating practices including checkups, testing, diagnosis and prescriptions.
  2. Protect Patient Privacy: As new technology devices emerge, privacy has increasingly become a top concern for patients, healthcare providers and hospitals. To ensure that patient records are kept secure, an open API humanoid robot can be programmed to connect with a hospital’s private cloud server, ensuring patient’s confidential information can only be accessed with hospital credentials.
  3. Entertain Patients: Hospitals often have the negative connotation of being a scary place. To make patients’ visits more enjoyable, robots can provide entertainment by dancing, playing games and communicating using voice commands and gesture control capabilities.
  4. Shorten Wait Times: In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the average Emergency Room (ER) wait times were roughly 30 minutes and the average treatment times were about 90 minutes, resulting in wait times of roughly two hours. To reduce long wait times and improve the patients’ experience, intelligent robots can be deployed in waiting rooms for a variety of applications including assisting patients waiting in the ER with their administrative paperwork.
  5. Enhance Physical Therapy: In addition to waiting rooms, service robots can assist with physical therapy sessions. Using a projector or touch screen, robots can display instructional videos to help patients learn the proper technique for rehabilitation exercises.
  6. Comfort Children: Hospitals can be a foreign place for children. To ease any concerns children may have prior to their appointment, a robot’s touchscreen can be used to tell stories, display educational materials, or stream videos to calm a child during stressful situations.
  7. Overcome Language Barriers: As global travel continues to grow, the percentage of patients who visit a hospital outside of their native country increases. Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a programed language database, robots can help doctors communicate and quickly diagnose patients from abroad.
  8. Provide 24/7 Care: Robots equipped with cameras and sensors can also assist patients by performing around-the-clock patient monitoring, ensuring that patients receive constant care. Additionally, as the care robots for the elderly, robots can connect to wearables such as a heart rate monitor to keep an eye on a people’s vitals and contact a healthcare professional should an issue arise.

The applications for robots in the healthcare environment are continuing to grow, and some of the top hospitals in America are already deploying robots to help reduce costs, streamline operations and improve the patient experience. Ultimately, the future of robotics in healthcare will be determined by implementation, but for now the future looks bright.

Sanbot performs real services for businesses

[Ebrun]Imagine that: when you go into a supermarket, it is a robot that greets you, introduces you the latest promotional activity; and also, it is a robot that guides you to process membership card and the electronics coupons, and collects payment from you… Those are what Sanbot can do.

Adhering to the concept of  "Robotics as a Service" , Sanbot intelligent robot is a robotic product researched and developed independently by QIHAN Technology. The robot is equipped with rich perception, including touching perception, RGB image, 3D image, PIR thermoinduction, IR, voice, gyroscope and touchscreen, etc. In addition, it is capable of voice interaction, touching interaction, gesture interaction, posture interaction, mobile App mobile control, etc.; Furthermore, Sanbot can perform semantic comprehension, facial recognition, independent voice location, auto charge, intelligent safety protection and more artificial intelligence. Since its debut, the open API humanoid robots have gone into scenarios such as family, commercial chain, customs inspection, banks and the public service area.

In commercial chain area, the latest version Sanbot robot, Sanbot intelligent shopping robot can take the work of attracting consumers, advertising promotion, guidance and interpretation, cashier assistant, membership card processing, remote shop keeping and intelligent management, especially for supermarket, retail shop and related scenarios.

Ryan Wu, the vice president of QIHAN Technology introduced to Ebrun, “In the offline shop, it does not really help retail with their businesses if a robot only attracts customers into the shops. Thus it’s not popular, not even to promote the transformation of traditional retail business or intelligent business. But now, with the mature of technology and the integration of scenarios, robot can play a bigger and bigger role.”

In the past year, Sanbot service robots were popularly used in retail scenarios including clothing shop, jewelry shop, clock shop and other middle-high-end area. The shops might not very large but their service satisfaction is important to customers. Sanbot helped retails with questionnaire, passenger flow analysis and staff check-in services, as well as production introduction and advertising promotion. In a restaurant, supermarket or convenient store, Sanbot offered services such as dispensing electronic coupons, customer reception, entertainment interaction, payment collection, membership card processing, etc. Ryan told Ebrun.

In generally, offline business uses robot to conduct standardized, routine and low extra-value work. Or you can say that, it does the job human staff would like not to. At this aspect, Sanbot can save much labor cost than human staff, it handles repetitive work with higher efficient and higher accurate than human staff. It does not feel annoyed and tired.

Another highlight of Sanbot intelligent robot is Sanbot's most innovative business management system - MPS (Multi-service Platform System). Sanbot robots held traffic safety knowledge competition

Hello, Sir! Where is the portable fire extinguisher? A, Under the couch; B, At door A; C, At window B?” On Jun 24th, at the Chegongmiao Metro Station in Shenzhen city, Sanbot humanoid robot performed one competition about safety knowledge in the metro station, amazing massive passengers at the scene.

It was the opening ceremony of Shenzhen Rail Transit Promotional Season and fifth anniversary celebration on Jun 24th. Since that day, the 3-month activity has begun promoting knowledge of civil bus ride, which enhances passengers’ concept of safe ride and creates the atmosphere of safe courtesy and civil travel. Shenzhen Rail Transit Office, the Traffic Branch of Public Security Bureau and Shenzhen Metro Group Corporation participated in the opening ceremony. QIHAN Sanbot was invited grandly as the host of safety knowledge competition and Sanbot service robot  is the first robot which worked in the metro station.

At the opening ceremony activity, the fascinating competition of metro safety knowledge became the greatest highlight.

Gifts for competition winners

Hello, the manual fire alarms are set both in the hall and platform of metro station; which way can you use to inform metro staff once the fire happens? A, Touch manual alarm; B, Press the manual alarm. ” Sanbot inquired. What was interesting was that Sanbot would say “Congratulations, your answer is right and you can have a gift now!” when the robot recognized the right answer. The hi-level human-robot interactive experience attracted hundreds of people to have a look or participate in.

It is very interesting and attractive that the advanced AI robot hosts safety promotional activity,” Mr. Wang, one passenger told the working staff, “the effect must be better than that of human staff as human is too common to stop the passers-by. Now organizer uses a robot to publicize safety knowledge, which is impressive and people can remember the knowledge easily. I like that.”

On that day, Sanbot also offered services at the entrance of business coach of metro line 11. The robot reminded each passenger to swipe card at the coach door and broadcast announcements. The working staff told the media, “Intelligent service robot can reduce staff’s workload. During the riding rush hours, the workloads are very heavy and we cannot pay attention to each passenger. With the robot, we are released from the monotonous work and can operate more complex work.”

QIHAN Technology, the manufacturer of the intelligent robot, told the metro manager that Sanbot robot integrated information broadcast, voice interaction, independent walking, automatic obstacle avoidance and security surveillance functions etc. According to the scenarios, Sanbot could offer safety knowledge promotional services, such as notices at entrance, escalator riding, and notices in coach, etc. In this way, passengers would absorb the safety knowledge unconsciously.

Fall into a lawsuit? Sanbot legal service robot helps

It takes the jobs of lawyers to answer over 50,000 special questions, plays the role of lawsuit guide in the court to train litigants to know of the initiating processes and helps mediate disputes between neighbors and family members… In April, the customized intelligent legal service robot was developed successfully in China Software Valley in Nanjing City and began to offer service. It seemed there was wide gap between law and big data and artificial intelligence, but the cross-border team-up brought the intelligent service robot with “brain of law”.

“Hello, what can I do for you?” When the reporter of Nanjing Daily was talking with a working staff, a cute intelligent humanoid robot came over and greeted them. That was an intelligent robot developed by QIHAN Technology and “brain of law” given by Nanjing University and some other universities.

Inquisitor: What should I do if my boss owes me salary?

Sanbot Legal service robot: Does the opponent accept the owed amount? One, he or she accepts; Two, he or she is controversial…” Faced with numerous questions of labor dispute and feneration from inquisitor, Xiaofa (name of the legal service robot) responded with details and listed the laws and regulations, judicial point of view and related cases on the screen. At last, according to the claims from inquisitor, Xiaofa provided QR code for inquisitor to download the big data report, which predicted the probable result of judgment, approval rating and reject rating, analyzed the probable factors leading to lawsuit failure and reminded the litigant of evidences, time cost and economic cost…

It is not strange that the robot can recognize and speak Chinese, and the important thing is that the advanced AI robot can recognize and speak near 30 foreign languages, and quote legal regulations, analyze cases and make reasoning and judgement. Du Xiangyang, the lawsuit solution developer told Nanjing Daily, “Xiaofa is capable of communication, facial recognition, voice command and source recognition, independent walking and the other basic functions, and the most advanced is the human-robot interactions in laws and regulations. The programmable humanoid robot can answer over 50,000 related questions, including civil law, criminal law, commercial law and other numerous areas.”

How does the robot learn and use the laws and regulations? It is the latest technology application achievement of legal big data. In the opinions of the administrator of the project Liang Yanyuan and other AI engineers, laws and regulations, accusations and the relevant legal terms are all codes. Via technologies such as algorithm, intelligent mapping, etc., robot can also imitate lawyers to question closely, imitate judge the logic and make the final conclusion.

“It was last year when the thought of lawsuit service robot came out.” Du Xiangyang told the media. “The judicial service professional personnel are lacking, the cost of lawsuit consultant is high and normal citizens know little about lawsuit processes, which are the pain points for legal services. An advanced intelligent robot, integrated with professional knowledge of laws and regulations is very helpful to the society.”

As far as we know, till now, over 80 Xiaofa Sanbot legal service robots has been serving in courts, justice bureaus and legal branches in Zhejiang, Guangdong and more provinces, to take the job of services including lawsuit guidance, lawsuit consultant. The robots can be for sales or renting. Du told Nanjing Daily in the end,“this was a society of ‘Robotics as a Service’, and in the future, any areas related to laws could adopt the intelligent legal service robot. The competitors are not too many and our robots are of first-rated hardware and software, therefore, we would have a prosperous future regarding this robot product.”

Have you realize that the robots are around you?

We may not realize that, we are touching and interacting with service robots every day. When we go through the self-checkout lane at the grocery store, it is a robot to service us. When we use a ticket kiosk at the movie theater, it is a robot to service us. Even when we order a takeout, we are still interacting with a robot, different kinds.

Now, robots are being designed and even have been used to serve drinks at coffee shops, restaurant, airport or customs inspections and many other scenarios. The robot suppliers such as Pepper, Sanbot, Amy, Ubtech are leading the world robots’ development.

The companies believe that consistency with each action, along with remote ordering and personalization, will be more and more agreeable to customers. That kind of consistency can be more helpful to the service industries. It is also a good sample that robot services in a bar. MIT’s Sensable City Lab is one of the groups working to perfect the robotic bartender. The robot can not only pour an accurate drink, it can also slice a lemon and shake a cocktail shaker like any human bartender.

Maybe it is still early for a personal robot to help people with all the home work such as cleaning your home, making food or talking about love. But they can still do a lot right now, securing your house, monitoring your child’s condition at home and entertainment, etc. Masayoshi Son, the chairman of Softbank robotics, claimed that the intelligence quotient of a robot would reach 10,000 with the AI’s development, 100 times of a general IQ. That will be another kind of world and let’s just wait and see.
